FRESH START WRITERS
In the autumn of 2006 a small group of people gathered in St. John's Church Hall in Brigg, North Lincolnshire, United Kingdom.
They had responded to a Fresh Start idea that an over 50s' creative writing group could be formed. The group grew organically and moved its sessions to Horsefair Paddock, Brigg.
The age range of members spanned from 51 to 83 and it was agreed that their initial focus would be on writing short stories and poems for children.
There were no great expectations or grandiose aims but it soon became obvious that all members of the group, some experienced writers and some not, possessed a wealth of talent. Between them they produced over 50 pieces of work.
Excited by such talent, Rachael Blake, Fresh Start Project Manager, agreed that the organisation would back the publication of a book.
There was just one thing missing. What good is a children's book without illustrations? That issue was soon resolved when the Head Teacher at Wrawby Primary School gave permission for the group to spend an afternoon reading and talking to Year 4 and 5 pupils in the hopes that they might provide some illustrations for the book.
Before the group had exited the building the children had rushed to their desks to start work on the wonderful illustrations that can be seen and enjoyed in this book.
The Fresh Start Writers are extremely proud to have worked with such enthusiastic children who demonstrated that there can be great empathy and understanding between the young and no so young.

In 2008 David worked with a group of older people who attend the Burnham Road Day Centre in Epworth. Their ages range from 77 to 103! He taped some of their childhood memories and then compiled their fascinating stories into book form. The group then visited Year 6 pupils of Epworth Primary School who contributed some wonderful illustrations and poems.
